Dr.
Torgesen will present research based information on the requirements
at the school and classroom level for preventing reading disabilities
in young children and the essential features of reading instruction
for struggling readers in grades 4-12.
Dr.
Torgesen received his Ph.D. in Developmental and Clinical Psychology
from the University of Michigan in 1976. Over
the past 30 years, he has published more than 170 articles, book
chapters, books, and tests concerning students with learning
and reading difficulties. He is currently the W. Russel
and Eugenia Morcom Chair of Psychology and Education at Florida
State University, where he also directs the Florida Center for
Reading Research. |

Margaret G. McKeown will
focus on comprehension and vocabulary development. Vocabulary
is key to students’ literacy development. I will discuss principles
of vocabulary acquisition and instructional practices that
are effective for influencing comprehension. Discussion of
comprehension
will focus on building meaning as a process and the design
of instruction that helps students take control of the process
of
understanding text.
Dr.
McKeown is a Senior Scientist at the University of Pittsburgh's
Learning Research and Development
Center. Dr.
McKeown's
work addresses practical, current problems that classroom
teachers and their students face. Her work covers the areas
of instructional
design and teacher professional development in reading comprehension
and vocabulary. Dr. McKeown received her Ph.D. in education
from the University of Pittsburgh in 1983. |
